An idea for a day out

Diamante’s murals and views from Cirella

In Diamante, paintings leave the galleries and appear on the walls of houses. In Cirella, old walls and sea views hold your gaze. Bring a camera, though it is just as pleasant to wander the lanes and sit wherever you feel like staying a little longer.

Travel between Diamante and Cirella by car or pre-arranged transport. Confirm access to the ruins and monastery, and the opening hours of your chosen restaurant, before the trip. If the sea appeals more, spend the afternoon on the beach.

Morning among Diamante’s murals

Set off through the lanes of old Diamante and look for murals. A painting may cover a large wall, but look around it too: at the doors, steps and windows. They make art part of an ordinary street here, and each turn brings something new.

Stop by the Basilica of the Immacolata, formally Basilica Minore dell’Immacolata Concezione. Then walk onto Lungomare Vecchio by Corso Vittorio Emanuele. After the narrow lanes, the sea opens out before you.

You could stop for lunch at La Taverna del Conte. Afterwards, there is still time for coffee or another look at your favourite mural before you head to Cirella.

Afternoon in Cirella

From Cirella Vecchia, you can see the sea and the present-day town below. After the colours of Diamante, your eyes rest on old walls and an open panorama. When the ruins are open, you can explore the remains of the settlement and the area around Monastero dei Minimi.

Then head down to seaside Cirella, to the Church of Santa Maria dei Fiori and towards the view of Isola di Cirella. On the map, Cirella Vecchia marks the hilltop ruins; the seaside town and beach are lower down.

Or an afternoon on the beach? At Riviera Azzurra, you can stay by the water instead of visiting the ruins. Cala piccola di Sant’Anna will appeal if you would like to see a small cove; before descending, make sure the access path is open. Choose whichever you feel more like doing today.

An evening in Cirella or at Cedromare

For dinner in seaside Cirella, try Tartana Club. If you prefer to return home, you can prepare your evening meal in Cedromare’s kitchen.

You could also begin in Cirella and leave Diamante until later. Visiting the same places at a different time lets you arrange the walk, beach time and meal break differently.
